Mindful activities for the kids

We all know of the benefits of mindfulness for adults, but did you know that it can also be positive for children too? Mindfulness is the practice of bringing a gentle and accepting attitude to the present moment, and promotes happiness, connection and brings joy to our day.

There are many ways to create mindful moments, and we’ve come up with a list that you can try with the whole family. These activities are intended to bring all the benefits of mindfulness, but also some fun to your school holidays as well!

Make a Glitter Jar

Not only is the Glitter Jar a perfect calming tool and assists with developing focus in children, it’s also a fun and easy craft project. All you need is a jar that will hold liquid tightly, clear glue, glitter in your favourite colours, food colouring, hot water and something to stir with like a whisk or spoon. Simply pour the hot water and glue into the jar, and mix together with the whisk – this creates your base to then add your glitter. Experiment with adding different amounts and colours of glitter – we suggest starting with 1-2 tablespoons, and the glue in the water will provide thickness to help create glitter swirls.

Add a few drops of food colouring for extra fun, close the jar and give it a good shake. Once the water cools, set the jar down and watch the glitter and colours settle as your minds and thoughts return to the present.

Sensory Walks

We can’t add enough fresh air and sunshine to our day, so why not turn a daily walk with the family into a mindful activity that engages all five senses? You could try a Safari Walk at Greenough Walking Trail, and ask children to identify any animals that crawl, fly or walk, listen for sounds or spot any beautiful plants on their travels. Another idea could be a Rainbow Walk, where children identify something that represents each colour of the rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet). To build their creativity, why not get them to draw what they find when they return from their walk?

Freeze Dance

A great activity to get everyone up and moving! Turn up your favourite playlist and get dancing – when the music stops, freeze the way you are or suggest freezing in a pose each time that reflects how the music feels to those participating. Not only does this activity allow everyone to be in the present moment, it also drives movement and creative expression. Grab your playlists from Sanity.

Creating Vision & Gratitude

Visualisation helps to bring attention to your feelings and inspires imagination. Create your own family vision board and enjoy the quiet time together finding images that are meaningful to you.
We love a positive quote to start our day, and children could also come up with their own positive statement. They could also draw what they are grateful for that’s displayed in the home to encourage moments of reflection and positive thinking. Grab your supplies from Target.

Mindful Toys

There are many toys that can help to develop mindfulness, without you even knowing it! Any play that involves capturing a child’s attention and requires concentration will help to transport them into the present moment. Visit your local park with a kite, introduce classic games such as dominoes and cards, get creative with mindful colouring or you could try a good old kaleidoscope or Rubik’s Cube.
